How to Zoom notes

 1. require camera to be on the student-to see body language and facial expressions. Camera must be on as it helps the energy in the class but make exceptions for those students with tech issues

2. Must wear pants, and do not change while the camera is on

3. Never take your device to the bathroom

Running class

1. If possible, have an assistant to monitor the chat. You can disable private chat in zoom start with it off.

Goal of classical education is conversation.

1. Asynchronous=video and kids watch later. Synchronous-meet at the same time

2. Have students bring questions to class

3. Drop Box, google drive, Canvas shared documents-one way. read book or chapter before class. the day before class have a shared doc where student needs to write 2 questions about the passage. Each student does this and posts to the doc. Add page number and list it.  This is more Socratic and it allows forethought. Also, have students read through the list of questions in advance.

ex: Name-"question/' page # that student leads the discussion on that question.

Asking questions- 1) the kind of questions to ask 2) weave the questions into the conversation

-->kind of questions-5 common topics LTW

1. do a lesson on the 5 common topics and teach students how to ask good questions. This helps them ask good questions.

2. types of questions: descriptive-quiz comprehension but no thinking or interpretive-why? This is a thought provoking question. What did the author mean when he used the term x?

descriptive-objective and interpretive-subjective

Narration-summarize in your own words. Retell in your own words with some reputation. 2-3 sentences=students sometimes have a different view point

chat-common topics. Discuss via chat box or ask each person. Open conversation unmute speakers and talk with a free flow (8 or fewer) if 9 or more use chat box

identify yourself in chat-raise your hand then unmute

raise hand moves to the top and teacher can call on the student

mute/unmute can be set for student or teacher control

a student can also share their screen =management-rules for class

create conversation is the goal

1. with questions (forethought) and narration the stage is set and now it is time to weave. Bring their comments into the conversation. comment-thank you and move on but a weaver wants to bring the comment into the conversation. If a comment is way off trying to help the student clarify their point. Give the student some thread (clarifying questions) so he can unpack his ideas and connect to the other ideas.

Zoom teaching is exhausting. You are the energy behind the class. You have to be focused and attend to the debates. You have to weave together the idea to keep the attention of the class. Online you need the conversation.

When there is silence just wait, take a drink and wait. Ask a particular student...esp the quiet one. If a student responds with "I don't know?" help them think it through. Do not move on to another student. Keep a checklist of students who have spoken up.

Essay-Chersterton-we think quiet people are humble-loud ones are arrogant

Discussion board-you need energy in the board. All you time is on the board. You need to initially create energy but you don't need to respons to every post by asking questions. However questions to keep the energy going. Students can also be required to ask questions of one another.

Socratic reasons-here's why this is right/wrong? Which do you support?

3 questions Leo Tolstoy?

Kern: Rhetoric-the one art to rule them all

Moment of clarity or flash of knowledge. You want to share insights or joy with children. Some are ready and get excited, others not so much

You want to bear witness to the truth. To be a sign post toward truth. You open their eyes, enilghten and change them. We also want to be a muse. To have magic in our words, to speak the truth. Share a dream, see the world in  deeper, richer view

all teachers, parents have are words--Hamlet

What is the power of words? To bless and curse is in the power of the tongue. Life and death are in our words.

We must rethink the way we teach.

1st principle Jesus was the unmoved mover

Logos first principle of everything it brings order to chaos-ordered curriculum, assessment and pedagogy. Rhetoric is an element of the curriculum.

Jesus + Rhetoric=rule them all

Rhetoric brings us to Logos

Sophists use these techniques to manipulate emotions of others. Not school tools that rely on emotional response. Mom tools. God given tools to persuade, bless and maintain harmony.

The evil one hijacked rhetoric. The devil creates nothing. He can only imitate and hijack. He is a liar who twists everything and steals from God.   the devil lacks creativity.

Thesis (main point) Rhetoric rules the other arts of the classical curriuclum

Sub thesis-and its overthrow has led to civilizational decline anddespair. Serious mental and spiritual disorder.

Love your neightbor using language to bless them. Teach christian classical rhetoric skills. It is important to know Jesus.
